What you see
- Tokens per day, so a heavy day stands out.
- Tokens per project, to see which repository eats your allowance.
- Tokens per model and per session.
- Input, output, cache-write and cache-read tokens counted separately, because they are priced very differently.
Where the numbers come from
Claude Code writes every session to ~/.claude/projects and Codex to ~/.codex/sessions, and each model response in those files records its token counts. Rollcage adds them up. Nothing is estimated, and no API key or sign-in is needed.
What cost means on a subscription
For Claude models, Rollcage prices each response at Anthropic's API list prices, including cache reads and writes. If you pay per token, that's close to your bill. If you're on a Pro or Max plan, it's what the same usage would have cost through the API, which is the easiest way to tell whether the plan is worth it. Codex sessions are counted in tokens.
Compared with the built-in commands
Claude Code's /cost and /usage and Codex's /status tell you about the current session or your current limits. They don't show last Tuesday, or which project used the most. Command-line tools such as ccusage read the same local files and print tables in the terminal. Rollcage shows the same data in a Mac window next to everything else it knows about your agents. The guides on Claude Code usage and cost and Codex usage compare the options.
Questions
Does usage tracking need my API key?
No. It only reads the transcript files the agents already keep on your Mac.
Why doesn't the cost match my invoice exactly?
Costs are calculated from list prices. Discounts, credits and usage from other machines or tools aren't in your local transcripts. On a subscription plan there's no per-token bill at all, so the figure is an API-equivalent.
Does it track Cursor usage?
Not yet. Token tracking covers Claude Code and Codex, which record token counts in local transcripts.
How far back does it go?
As far back as the transcripts on your Mac. Claude Code removes old transcripts after a retention period you can change in its settings, so older days disappear when the files do.
